Feeling Burnt Out? 10 Things You’re Allowed To Ask For Help With..

There’s tired… and then there’s TIRED.

The kind where someone asks what you want for dinner and you genuinely feel like that might be the question that tips you over the edge. 😂

The washing basket is somehow reproducing overnight, there’s nothing in the fridge, you need to book approximately 14 appointments, someone needs a PE kit tomorrow and you’ve been meaning to sort that cupboard for six months.

Sound familiar?

When life gets really busy, we have a habit of telling ourselves we should be able to cope with it all.

Work. Kids. Cleaning. Food shopping. Cooking. Parents. Appointments. Birthdays. School admin. Washing. Life admin. Trying to maintain some vague semblance of a social life.

And somewhere amongst all of that, apparently we’re meant to ‘make time for ourselves’. 😂

What does burnout actually look like at home?

Burnout and overwhelm don’t always look dramatic.

Sometimes it’s staring at the washing machine knowing you need to put it on, but feeling like you physically cannot deal with one more thing.

It’s living out of the clean washing basket because putting everything away has become tomorrow’s problem for the 11th day running.

It can be forgetting things, feeling snappy, avoiding messages, eating whatever is easiest or looking around your home and having absolutely no idea where to start.

It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re lazy or disorganised.

It might simply mean your plate is completely and utterly full.

And sometimes the answer isn’t another productivity hack or a shiny new planner.

Sometimes you need some practical help.

10 things you’re allowed to ask for help with when life gets too much

1. Cleaning your home

You do not receive a medal for scrubbing your own bathroom.

If cleaning is eating into the tiny amount of free time you have, getting some help with household cleaning can make an enormous difference.

2. Home organisation and decluttering

We all have that area.

Cupboard. Garage. Spare room. Playroom. Wardrobe.

The place where things go when you say, ‘I’ll sort that later.’

Later has arrived.

Having someone help you declutter and organise your home can make the job feel far less overwhelming.

3. Doing the food shop

Planning meals, writing the list, doing the food shop, putting it away and then actually cooking everything is practically a department in itself.

You’re allowed to get help with it.

4. Meal preparation

Having a few meals prepared and ready to go can make a chaotic week feel approximately 63% more manageable.

Not a scientifically verified statistic, admittedly, but we stand by it.

5. Life admin

Forms. Returns. Research. Bookings. Appointments. Lists. Phone calls.

Those tiny jobs have an irritating habit of multiplying.

Getting some help with life admin and working through a chunk of your to-do list can clear a surprising amount of headspace.

6. Holiday preparation

Because apparently going on holiday requires three weeks of unpaid project management beforehand.

Packing lists, toiletries, holiday shopping, the kids’ clothes, passports, chargers, airport parking…

You’re allowed to outsource some of the faff.

7. Preparing for a new baby

If there was ever a time when you were allowed to ask for help, this is it.

Organising baby clothes, preparing the nursery, batch cooking, shopping for essentials or simply getting the house back under control can make those final weeks feel much calmer.

8. Practical help for an elderly relative

Sometimes you want to be their daughter, son, granddaughter, grandson or friend.

Not their cleaner, shopper, organiser, administrator and general fixer-of-everything.

Having another trusted pair of hands to provide practical help, shopping, meal preparation or companionship can make life easier for everyone.

9. Getting ready for an event

Hosting Christmas? Birthday party? Family coming over? Wedding bits everywhere?

You don’t have to do every last job yourself.

10. The random job that has been sitting on your list FOREVER

This is our favourite category.

The job that doesn’t neatly fit into a box.

The one you keep moving from Monday’s list to Tuesday’s list and then quietly transferring to ‘next week’.

Ask us.

You might be surprised how much lighter you feel once it’s finally done.
