How to Get Your Life Organised When You Don’t Know Where to Start

So you’ve decided you need to get organised.

Excellent.

You look around the house.

There’s washing everywhere.

The fridge is empty.

Your inbox has become mildly threatening.

The spare room is no longer technically a room.

You have 96 screenshots of things you need to remember.

And suddenly getting organised feels like another enormous job you don’t have time to do.

We get it.

So forget the Pinterest-perfect house for a minute.

Here’s where we’d actually start.

1. Start with a massive brain dump

Get a piece of paper and write down EVERYTHING currently floating around your head.

And we mean everything.

Book dentist.

Return parcel.

Sort wardrobe.

Buy birthday present.

Plan dinners.

Change bedding.

Cancel subscription.

Find passport.

Ring Mum.

Nothing is too small.

The aim isn’t to create the world’s prettiest to-do list. It’s to get all those little reminders out of your brain and onto paper.

Already better.

2. Work out what’s actually bothering you

Not everything on your list matters equally.

Ask yourself:

What would make my life noticeably easier if it was sorted this week?

Maybe it’s finally clearing the kitchen.

Maybe it’s filling the freezer with meals.

Maybe it’s sorting the kids’ clothes.

Maybe it’s booking the appointments you’ve been avoiding.

Start there.

Trying to organise your entire life in one weekend is generally how you end up sitting on the bedroom floor surrounded by clothes wondering why you started.

3. Declutter before you organise

This one is HUGE.

Sometimes we buy baskets, boxes, dividers and storage solutions when what we actually need is…

less stuff.

Before you organise a space, go through it.

Keep.

Donate.

Sell.

Bin.

Then organise what’s left.

Otherwise you’re essentially buying attractive little containers for things you don’t actually want. 😂

4. Give the things that cause daily chaos a home

Keys.

School letters.

Shoes.

Bags.

Chargers.

Post.

The things you’re forever hunting for need somewhere obvious to live.

It doesn’t need to look Instagram-worthy.

It needs to work.

A basket by the front door that everyone actually uses beats an elaborate organisational system nobody follows.

Every. Single. Time.

5. Make tomorrow easier

This is one of our favourite rules.

Whenever you have a little burst of energy, don’t use all of it trying to fix your entire life.

Do something that makes tomorrow easier.

Put a wash on.

Prepare lunch.

Lay clothes out.

Order the food shop.

Pack the school bags.

Write tomorrow’s top three jobs.

Small things make a difference.

6. Try a one-hour home reset

Set a timer for one hour.

Put some music on.

Pick ONE area.

And go.

Don’t suddenly decide halfway through that now is the perfect time to look through a box of photographs from 2007.

We know your tricks. 😂

Stick to the mission.

You’d be amazed what you can change in an hour when you’re not bouncing between 14 different jobs.

7. Decide what you DON’T need to do yourself

This might be the most important step.

Look at your list again.

What could somebody else do?

Could someone clean?

Do the food shop?

Help organise a room?

Prepare some meals?

Run errands?

Help an elderly parent?

Get everything sorted before your holiday?

Being organised doesn’t mean personally completing every task.

It means making sure the things that matter get done.

There is a difference.
